All in all, foreigners purchased 3900 flats in Poland in 2012, compared with 4400 in 2011, and 4600 in 2009, when the market was at its most buoyant.

Warsaw proved the most popular again last year, with 1200 apartments snapped up by outsiders in 2012. Krakow came next with 380, followed by Wroclaw with 225.

However, it wasn't just the biggest cities that appealed to foreigners. Zakopane in the Tatra mountains proved a popular spot, as did the Baltic port of Swinoujscie on the German border.

After Poland joined the EU in 2004, the number of flats purchased by foreigners grew steadily each year, before peaking in 2009, chiming in with the credit crunch.

The Ministry of the Interior does not collect data on the values of the purchased properties. (nh)
