Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands and Portugal write in the letter to Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Janusz Piechocinski that the 10 billion zlotys (2.5 billion euros) in unpaid bills is "unusual and unprecedented" and that the delay in payment should be rectified in order to avoid “negative implications to the image of Poland's business environment," the Reuters news agency, which has seen the letter, reports.

Firms in dispute with the Polish road building agency GDDKiA include Austria's Strabag and Alpine Bau, Germany's Bilfinger, Ireland's SIAC, SISK and Roadbridge, and Spain's Ferrovial.

GDDKiA claims payment has been delayed because the work by the firms has been substandard. (pg)
