The Ireland-based Ryanair low-cost carrier has announced it will not be returning to the recently re-opened Modlin airport near Warsaw until at least 26 October.

“Ryanair will continue to operate its Warsaw flights to/from Warsaw Chopin Airport for the duration of the summer season, until 26th October 2013, to facilitate our Warsaw passengers,” a statement released by Ryanair's head of communications Robin Kiely said.

“Ryanair sincerely apologises to all affected passengers for any inconvenience cause. Discussions with Warsaw Modlin Airport are ongoing and any further updates will be published on the Ryanair.com website.” the statement continues.

Modlin airport re-opened on 3 July after over six months of runway repairs. But since the reopening, the airport, 45 kilometres from the Polish capital, has had no commercial airline traffic.

Last week, the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air said it would not be returning to Modlin, which opened to great fanfare last summer as Warsaw's second airport, and said it would continue to operate from the main Warsaw Chopin airport.

Ryanair, which was to return to the airport in September, appears to be concerned about how to transport passengers to and from Modlin, up to one-hours drive from the capital. (pg)
