The “Social Diagnosis 2013” report found that among Poles intending to work abroad, 40 percent of those surveyed aim to to live in Germany.

The United Kingdom was in second place (23 percent), followed by the Netherlands (12 percent) and Norway (9 percent).

Meanwhile, of those Poles who have returned to their homeland, fewer are returning on account of losing their jobs.

The survey, which is biennial, found that 23 percent of respondents returned to Poland owing to having lost a job. However, in 2009, 34 percent came home for such reasons.

The proportion of people returning because they supposedly always planned to do so has also fallen. This year, 23 percent said they came home for this reason, whereas previously, some 30 percent of those surveyed gave such an explanation.

Meanwhile, the proportion of those who have returned to Poland temporarily, so as to settle outstanding affairs, has increased. This year, 13 percent did so, whereas in 2011 it was 8 percent, and in 2009, 3 percent.

Only 2 percent of those surveyed said they returned because of the prospect of better earnings in Poland. In 2009, when the crisis swept through Europe, 5 percent of respondents gave such an explanation. (nh)
