According to data released on Monday by Poland's Central Statisitical Office (GUS), retail sales for July marked a 4.3 percent increase compared with the same month last year.

Analysts had earlier predicted that the rate would not increase by more than 3.1 percent.

The most dynamic growth was seen in the sales of motor vehicles, with an increase of 14.5 percent in this sphere.

Sales of clothes, shoes, cosmetics and medicines also rose by close to nine percent.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate fell from 13.2 percent in June to 13.1 percent in July.

The number of Poles currently registered as unemployed is 2.093 million. (nh)
