“I am very excited that we have confirmed our original discovery in the Gapowo B-1 vertical well by successfully drilling the long lateral and encountering such excellent shows,” enthused company CEO Wolf Regener in a statement.

According to the company, “the well successfully drilled the targeted over-pressured, gas charged, organic-rich Lower Silurian and Ordovician shales that were originally encountered in the vertical Gapowo B-1 well.”

Poland is currently engaged in a bid to broaden its energy portfolio, partly as a means of becoming less dependent on Russian natural gas.

However, a January report by Poland's Supreme Audit Office (NIK) claimed that at the current rate, it will take 12 years before the country's shale gas potential can be properly assessed.

NIK stressed that while 113 licenses have been issued, only a small proportion of the territory in question has actually been explored.

It also specified that at present it takes an average 130 days to secure a license, whereas the process should last just 30 days. (nh)
