“Three unions have provided the employer with information about a possible strike,” confirmed Marek Zuk, chairman of the Civil Aviation Workers' Union.

The action follows an announcement that several hundred employees are due to be laid off as part of a restructuring programme.

The unionists have slammed the fact that an agreement concerning job security is due to expire on 10 June.

Michal Kaczmarzyk, director of 'Polish Airports' State Enterprise (PPL), which manages the airport, is against maintaining all current obligations on severance pay in the event of mass redundancies.

At present, members of staff who have been employed for ten years or more are entitled to be awarded a redundancy package to the level of 36 monthly salary payments, but Kaczmarzyk believes the rate to be too high.

Spokesman for PPL Przemyslaw Pryzbylski has said that the company is open to talks, but that demands to maintain the current status quo are “unjustifiable” in Kaczmarzyk's eyes. (nh)
