Poland’s labour minister has signalled that an improving economy may be a chance for unemployment in the country to drop below 13 percent this year.

Speaking to Polish Radio, Tuesday, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said that “I’m counting on [the unemployment rate] being below 13 percent, although the budget bill accounts for 13.8 percent,” adding that “such a drop would be much better than last year’s [figures].”

Meanwhile, the Sejm lower house of parliament is debating a bill which would see a change in the labour code concerning so-called ‘trash contracts’, which currently do not include any pension contributions.

The ruling government coalition wants to change this so that contributions are paid on contracts (umowa zlecenie) from 1,680 zloty (around 450 euro). “The changes may come in this year,” Kosiniak-Kamysz stated.

If the changes take effect this year, the Labour Ministry estimates that pension contributions on such contracts will boost state insurance coffers by as much as 650 million zloty in 2014. (jb)
