Estimates from the Insurance Guarantee Fund show that around a quarter of a million vehicles in Poland are not insured.

According to the Fund, the largest number of drivers without the mandatory OC third-party insurance are found in the Lubusz, Warmia-Mazuria and Western Pomerania regions, where the risk of an accident involving a party without the insurance is 1.5 greater than in other Polish regions.

“We have undertaken new projects to identify vehicles which are not insured, such as the ‘virtual policeman’, thanks to which the detectability of such vehicles has risen,” Elzbieta Wanat Polec from the Insurance Guarantee Fund said.

The Fund found that obligatory OC insurance is most often not purchased by males under the age of 25, even though younger drivers are three times more likely to have an accident, according to the Fund.

All vehicle owners are obliged to buy OC third-party insurance. If an accident does occur and the party at fault does not have such insurance, then the Insurance Guarantee Fund pays out the damages, although it does claim the damages back from the guilty party. (jb)
