Poland’s capital Warsaw as well as the Baltic city of Gdansk and the southern city of Krakow all feature on the shortlist, which was drawn from an initial 155 cities.

The competition, which is funded by the foundation of billionaire and one-time mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, offers 5 million euros to the winning city and 1 million euros for four runners-up for cities which are able to “generate innovative ideas that solve major challenges and improve city life.”

“Cities face many urgent challenges – from climate change to social isolation to youth unemployment. We need city leaders to continually reach for innovative new ways to address urban challenges – and then share what’s working with the world. That’s what the Mayors Challenge is all about,” Michael Bloomberg said in a competition press release.

Other contenders in the competition comprise a number of European capitals, such as Amsterdam, Athens, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Sofia and Stockholm, as well as the Brussels district of Schaerbeek. (jb)
