GUS has recorded that the average monthly disposable income in farming households in 2013 was 5044 zloty (1216 euros), some 755 zloty (182 euros) more than in non-agricultural households.

Between 2003 and 2013, the average disposable income of farmers rose by 152 percent, compared with 73 percent for those not working in agriculture.

The transformation accompanied Poland's accession to the European Union in 2004, with farmers among the chief beneficiaries of the union.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2004 Polish farmers received 6.5 billion zloty (1.56 billion euro) in combined subsidies provided by the EU and the state treasury.

However, in 2013 the level of subsidies for farmers was 14.2 billion zloty (3.4 billion euro) only slightly less than in the record year of 2011.

40 percent of farmers accessed their financial situation as good or very good in 2013, whereas in 2003 only 10 percent did so, according to a poll carried out by the ministry.(nh)
