The theme of the forum is innovation, and King Willem-Alexander noted how his country's perennial problem with flooding has provided a spur for Dutch development.

“Innovation is the discovery of new potential, new strengths, it's a kind of adventure,” he said.

“We learnt how enriching this adventure can be in our struggle with the sea.

“A new approach to governance in this sphere has made us safer, and at the same time our knowledge is now widely used all over the world.”

Hans de Boer, head of the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers reflected that “society wants to make use of better and better products.

“It's necessary to offer these products – they are a condition for a business's success in today's world.”

Following their participation in the forum, which was also attended by President Bronislaw Komorowski, the royal couple will visit the city of Poznan in western Poland. (nh)
