Traders and market analysts have noted that seasonal sales are starting earlier and earlier in Poland, but the cuts still fail to generate the interest shown in countries such as the UK.

Andrzej Falinski, director general of the Polish Trade and Distribution Organization (POHiD), noted that sales currently generate 4 to 5 percent of annual turnover for shops that have seasonal discounts.

Marek Zybert, chief economist at TMS Brokers, says that sales at clothing stores generate the most impressive turnover.

“Poles are beginning to shop for the latest fashions and trends,” he said.

“They are becoming wealthier, and more and more people are able to make such purchases.”

Katarzyna Borowiak, marketing manager of a mall in Gorzow Wielkopolski, says that sales are often starting over a month earlier in shopping centres than was previously the case.

“Once it was mostly mid-July, today shopping malls are starting sales at the end of June, and most chains launch their sales in mid-June.” (nh)
