Polish state airline LOT has suspended flights to Israel from Warsaw until Monday at the earliest due to concerns for passengers’ safety, the airline announced on Wednesday afternoon.

“This is caused by the tense situation in the region. The connection will be re-established as soon as possible and when we are sure that our operations are 100-percent safe,” LOT spokesperson Barbara Pijanowska-Kuras said.

“Passengers who have tickets to Tel Aviv issued before 23 July may rebook them until 31 October free of charge,” she added, saying that in the case of travel planned within next two weeks, passengers may ask for a refund.

Pijanowska-Kuras also said that upon special request, LOT will reroute tickets to Tel Aviv on flights to Larnaca. These changes may be made at no charge.

Several global airlines have already suspended flight to Tel Aviv and Israel due to the ongoing violence there, including Delta, Lufthansa, KLM, Swissair and Air France.

Hungarian-based low-cost carrier Wizzair followed LOT’s move by also cancelling flights. Meanwhile, British Airways is yet to take such a decision, saying it is monitoring the situation. (di/jb)
