The figures, which were released by Poland's Central Statistical Office (GUS), show that unemployment has fallen by 1.2 percent since July 2013.

The worst figures for July were registered by the north eastern region of Warmia-Masuria, where there was 18.6 percent unemployment, whereas the labour market was at its best in Wielkopolska, west-central Poland (8.2 percent).

Although Minister of Labour Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has claimed that the level of unemployment will continue to fall over the next three months, his view is not universally shared.

Janusz Jankowiak, chief economist of the Polish Business Council, has noted that September to December are typically months in which the rate rises, with seasonal work drying up.

“These months traditionally see growth [of unemployment], and no methodology can help that,” he told the TVN24 news channel.

“This means that the unemployment rate at the end of the year will be in the range of 12.6 - 12.7 percent,” he forecast. (nh)
