Coal miners from Silesia set off for Warsaw at the crack of dawn for a 'peaceful demonstration' to accompany Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz's inaugural policy statement.

“2000 people will gather in front of parliament,” revealed Patryk Kosela, spokesman for the Free Trade Union 'August 80'.

“It is a very modest delegation.

“We are not protesting against anything,” Kosela insisted.

“We are organising a public hearing of the policy statement of the new prime minister,” he added, stressing that the gathering will be “peaceful.”

Miners are eager to hear Kopacz's plans for Poland's struggling coal industry.

If unionists are displeased with her strategy, it is understood that they will hand over a petition of as of demands.

Poland's largest coal company, Kompania Weglowa, made a loss of more that 600 million zloty (145 million euro) last year.

However, while the state-owned giants have been recording colossal losses, private companies have shown that the industry can be profitable. (nh)
