The announcement, which was made by Poland’s Chief Veterinary Inspectorate on Friday, also informs that the incident is the first instance where a whole group of wild boar have been affected.

The animals were found in a corn field outside the village of Pilatowszczyzna, Grodek county, some 15 kilometres from the country’s border with Belarus. Eight of the wild boar were found to have the ASF virus.

All cases of ASF in Poland so far have been located in the Podlasie region in the vicinity of the border with Belarus.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, agriculture minister Marek Sawicki said that new regulations were being drafted which would give farmers living in the area affected by ASF compensation if they decided to give up pig farming for three years.

The first case of ASF in Poland took place in February this year, with a number of countries, including Russia, placing an embargo on Polish pork products soon after, putting a strain on the domestic meat industry. (jb)
