The city announced a tender for the construction of two extensions of the second metro line, on which construction work was finished at the end of September.

One extension is due to head westwards from the Rondo Daszyńskiego station, into the Wola district on Warsaw. The other will head to the north-east of Dworzec Wileński in the Praga district. Each of them will add three stations to the line.

The second line in its new shape is scheduled to be completed in 2019. It will then have tunnels extending for 13.5 kilometres and 13 stations.

Companies wishing to take part in the tender may file offers for either of the two extensions or for both of them.

“We are continuing investments into the most modern means of transport in the city, the underground railway,” said Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz.

“The central segment of the second metro line is ready. Now we are extending is by further stations and that is how a city is made,” she added.

Warsaw is applying for 85-percent co-financing for the project from the EU-funded Infrastructure and Environment programme. The full value of the investment, including the cost of buying rolling stock, will reach 4 billion zloty (some 950 million euro).

The construction of Warsaw's metro has a far-reaching history. After decades of planning, the first construction work was done in 1983. It was however not until 1995 that the first stations were opened and the first line was completed only in 2008. (kw)
