The airport forecasts 2.5 million passengers for next year.

The passenger numbers mean that Modlin airport, a converted military airport 40 km north-west of the capital, is now the 5th busiest of Poland’s 13 regional airports.

Currently the only airline flying to the airport is Ryanair, which is in the process of expanding its operations in Poland. The most popular destination is London Stansted, accounting for 300,000 passengers.

Piotr Okienczyc, director of the airport, commented that “the numbers speak for themselves; we are one of the fastest growing airports in Poland and probably in Europe.”

He added that the airport was planning to expand the terminal, which would expand Modlin’s capacity to 5 million passengers a year.

Since opening in 2011 as a low-cost alternative to Warsaw’s Chopin airport Modlin has been plagued by problems such as concerns over runway safety. Ryanair only returned to the airport in September 2013 following a renovation of infrastructure.

Modlin was recently voted by passengers to be the 9th worst airport in Europe. (sl)
