UK workers strike as biscuit production shifts to Poland

Staff at the factory, which is owned by United Biscuits, claim that the company, which was recently taken over by Turkish food giant Yildiz, has approved a series of unacceptable measures.

"The latest acts of withdrawing sick pay, transferring work from Liverpool to Poland and demands for people to work over Christmas are just the most recent instances in a management culture which believes it can threaten its way to a submissive workforce,'' commented union spokesman Stuart Fegan.

The first wave of the strike took place for 48 hours, earlier this week.

The staggered protest will resume on 3 December for 24 hours, and again on 6 December for the same period. A 48-hour stretch is also scheduled, beginning on 14 December.

The factory in Aintree, Liverpool, is famed for making Jacob's popular cream crackers, among other products. (nh)
