“India is counting mainly on coal for the future, they need this raw material and want to buy it,'' Pietrewicz said while in New Delhi on a working visit.

''They also want to modernize their mines.

''There is talk of 92 mines [to be modernized],” he noted.

According to Pietrewicz this is an opportunity for Polish firms, as “we have the potential [to be involved], after all we have the Central Mining Institute.

''Modernization requires knowledge of new mining techniques and the necessary safety requirements.

They [Indians] require this, and we are well prepared to supply it.”

Pietrewicz added that in addition India is interested in buying overseas mines, commenting that “Indians will also look at the Polish market.”

He gave the example of the Kazimierz-Juliusz coal mine which is set to be closed but could be kept open with foreign investment.

While in New Delhi, Pietrewicz met Narendra Singh Tomar, the Indian Minister for steel. He was accompanied by representatives of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency.

The announcement comes as Poland struggles to revive its own coal mining industry, which is on the verge of collapse. (sl)
