Poland is at the tail end of Europe in terms of innovation according to a new study by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The document presents an assessment of the current economic situation in 35 countries whose economy is currently in a transitional phase.

As noted by Mattia Romani, from EBRD, the innovation levels of many companies in Poland is very low, which mainly results from a relatively small investment in research and development.

This, EBRD says, amount to only 0.9 percent of GDP, against an EU average of two percent.

The problem could be that R&D in Poland is mainly funded by the state.

“In Poland, private companies contribute just a third of the funds needed for research and development,” Romani told Rzeczpospolita daily, adding that a majority of the research is conducted by government institutions and universities. (rg)
