The main aim of Polish State Railways (PKP) is to combat the decline in passenger frequency, with new Pendolino trains expected to help, said company CEO Jacek Leonkiewicz.

Speaking in an interview with the Polish Press Agency, Leonkiewicz explained, “Our main aim is a rise in passenger numbers, after which [our target is] a gradual rise in the profitability of our routes.”

Commenting on the recent introduction of high speed Pendolino trains, Leonkiewicz said “data shows a growth in passenger numbers in national routes for the second month in a row. An eight percent rise in February is a record in this company’s history.

“This without doubt is partially taking place due to the ‘Pendolino effect', because this train has made people who have never before taken the train, become interested in what PKP is able to offer.”

By the end of March only 13 of the 20 purchased Pendolino trains will be in service due to delays in certification at the end of last year, although Leonkiewicz assured that more will be introduced soon. (sl/rg)
