Poles reject euro, as Nobel laureate Wałęsa calls for adoption ASAP

Poland’s ex-president and non-violent resistance legend Lech Wałęsa says his last wish is to see Poland join the eurozone as soon as possible. But most Poles think it a bad idea, a poll shows.

“My last wish is that Poland join the eurozone as soon as possible,” Wałęsa said in a radio interview. “This is the last move to make Poland’s security complete.”
But TNS, a polling firm, says 52 percent of Poles think accession to the eurozone would be a bad idea, while a mere 15 percent support it. 23 percent believe it would be neither good nor bad and a tenth do not have an answer.
As many as two-thirds of Poles believe the euro would damage their economic standing. (an)
