According to market sources, in 2014 Poles bought 15 million litres of Bulgarian wine, making it the best selling wine on the Polish market, ahead of France and the USA.

Sales of Bulgarian wines rose by 10 percent last year. Meanwhile, Poles bought 9 million litres of French wine and 8 million litres from the USA in 2014.

Further on down the list were Spain and Portugal, each with 7 million litres, and Italy with 5 million litres.

However, the relatively low cost of Bulgarian wine has meant that in terms of value, the country placed third behind the USA and France, with sales amounting to just under PLN 190 million.

Wine producers are still fighting for their market position in Poland as Poles still trail in European rankings of wine consumption. According to consultancy KPMG, the average Poles drinks only 5.5 litres of wine annually, trailing the French, Italians, as well as neighbours Czechs and Slovaks. (jb)
