Question marks continue to hang over Poland’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal’s future, as the Italian construction firm in charge of the project demands extra money for completing the work.

The LNG terminal at the north-western seaport of Świnoujście by the German border was meant to reduce Poland’s energy dependence on Russia by enabling imports from Qatar.

But the project, due to be completed by the end of 2014, has faced delays and cost overruns with Lithuania completing its own project, which started later, first.

And now Saipem, the Italian company in charge of the project, is asking for penalties for late completion to be lifted – and for extra money on top.

Saipem says completion this summer is possible – provided the Polish government stumps up extra cash. (an)
