It will take at least another 24 months for Poland to start building its first nuclear power plant, in another postponement to alternative energy in the country.

The project is expected to cost between USD 10-15 billion, and has been hounded by hurdles. The latest was the decision by state-controlled utility PGE to cancel a consultancy contract and conduct its own research.

“This alone delays the program by at least two years,” an anonymous person familiar with the issue told Reuters. This person noted that because of its lack of expertise in preparing all the required reports, including studies on environmental impact, PGE will have to put back the development by a couple of years.

According to the original outlines, the power plant was set to be operational by 2020. This was later officially changed to 2025, with the whole project to be completed by 2035. (rg)
