The euro current would strengthen Poland’s economic integration with euro zone countries, said German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel.

“From the standpoint of Germany, Poland is among the top ten countries in terms of bilateral trade. A turnover of EUR 87 billion per year means that the value of trade with [Germany’s] neighbour across the Oder River is higher than with many other larger economies, such as Russia and Japan.

“For Poland, Germany is the most important trading partner, which leaves other countries far behind. Since 1995, our trade has increased more than six times over. In 2014 alone, it increased by 11 percent,” Minister Gabriel said.

A common currency

The German Minister was asked about Poland adopting the euro common currency. Despite joining the European Union in 2004, Poland has not yet adopted the euro currency.

“For Poland to introduce the euro would be desirable both from the point of view of the economic importance of the euro area, as well as strengthening the economic integration of Poland within the euro zone,” Minister Gabriel told the PAP news agency in an exclusive interview.

“However, I share the opinion of the Polish government that the euro should be introduced only if the Maastricht criteria can be realistically met. In this way [the country] will be able to avoid uncertainty in financial markets and among the population.” (rg)
