Polish regions in the bottom GDP-per capita rating

The regions of Lubelskie, Podkarpackie, Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Podlaskie and Swiętokrzyskie are among the worst in Europe in terms of GDP per capita, a new report by Eurostat says.

The Polish regions were listed as among the worst in the EU among areas ranked by total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) divided by inhabitants.

Swiętokrzyskie and Podlaskie tied at 49 PPS, while Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Podkarpackie and Lubelskie came in at 48 PPS each. The EU28 average was 100.

The region of Mazowieckie in Poland is the only one whose GDP per capital exceeded the EU average.

The worst region was the French island of Mayotte, with a mere 27 PPS.

On the other hand, the best performing regions were Inner London (UK, 325 PPS), Luxembourg (LU, 258 PPS) and Brussels Capital region (BE, 207 PPS).

The ranking “is the first on regional GDP based on the ESA 20101 methodology and data transmission programme. All the methodological changes that were implemented at national level as of September 2014 are applied at the regional level as well,” Eurostat wrote in the report published on Thursday. (rg)
