Polish team wins Mars Rover competition

A team from the Rzeszów University of Technology has come first in the 2015 University Rover Challenge, an annual robotics competition which in the past has seen numerous Polish successes.

The team from Rzeszów put forward the ‘Legendary III Rover’ which gained 460 points out of a maximum of 500, placing them well ahead of the runner-up team from the US Brigham Young University, on 371.
Initially 44 university teams entered the competition with 23 teams from 6 different countries qualifying to make the Finals, which were held in the desert of southern Utah.
In addition teams from the Wrocław University of Technology and the Bialystok University of Technology came third and fourth respectively, and all five Polish teams which made the Finals ranked within the top ten.
The Białystok University of Technology has previously won the competition three times, in 2011, 2013 and 2014.
The Mars Society Poland, one of the organizers of the competition, commented that “a Polish victory in these competitions is gradually becoming a ‘secular tradition.’ ”
Inspired by Polish teams’ successes in the US competitions Poland now hosts the European Rover Challenge, which was launched in 2014 and will take place again in the second half of this year. (sl/nh)
