Warsaw authorities have announced a list of transport investments that will be completed before 2020 and will receive EU funding, including 20km of new tram routes and an expansion of the Warsaw metro.

The largest single tram investment will be an entirely new 10km line linking the centre with the Wilanów district in the south of the city, which will also require 50 new trams to operate the route.

Krzysztof Karos, Director of Warsaw’s trams, has suggested that most of the work might begin during 2017-2018. Currently the most significant obstacle to construction is environmental regulation.

Apart from trams it has also been confirmed that Warsaw will continue with its aim of expanding the recently opened second metro line. The tender for the first phase has already been launched.

The current plans are to build 12.2 km of new tunnels, which will entail 11 new stations. The project is being partially financed by the EU, and is expected to cost a total of PLN 3.6 billion (EUR 870 million).

Other projects listed as priorities for 2020 include the purchase of 120 environmentally-friendly German buses and the creation of a Park and Ride system for Warsaw.

The total cost of the tram and bus investments is estimated at PLN 3 billion (EUR 720 million), which will be co-financed by the EU. (rg)
