Disused prison for sale in central Poland

An auction will he held this September in Łęczyca, central Poland, with town authorities set on selling off a disused prison.

The dilapidated complex served as a prison since the 18th century, on the premises of what had been a Dominican monastery.
During the Second World War, the occupying Nazi German regime likewise used the building as a prison, as did the communist regime following the war.
Many Solidarity activists were held at the site following the declaration of martial law in 1981.
It was not until 2006 that the building finally ceased to be used as a place of incarceration.
Since then, town authorities have endeavoured to use the complex as a setting for cultural initiatives.
Attempts to sell the site for over PLN 1 million have failed, meaning that the property could go for considerably less at the auction on 6 September. (nh)
