According to the Federal Service for the Oversight of Consumer Protection and Welfare (Rospotrebnadzor) a company from northern Poland that exported sprats in olive oil was at fault.

Among other factors, Rospotrebnadzor claims that the company provided incorrect labelling concerning the product's energy values and amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

A blanket ban on canned sprats from Poland has been put in place.

The move widens the range of Polish products that cannot be imported to Russia, following Moscow's embargo on EU meat, fruit and vegetables and dairy products in August 2014. The US, Canada, Norway and Australia were subjected to the same treatment.

The ban was introduced in retaliation against Western sanctions that were imposed as a result of Russia'a annexation of Crimea.

The embargo August 2014 embargo is due to continue until at least August 2016.

Meanwhile, Russia has been destroying shipments of illegally imported food. (nh/rk)
