Węglokoks Rybnicki Okręg Wydobywczy (ROW) has applied to Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) to buy some of the assets belonging to Kompania Węglowa, a state-owned coal group.

ROW, which is based in Katowice in the south of Poland, is part of Węglokoks, a state-controlled coal supplier.

The deal is for the following KW mines: KWK Bielszowice; KWK Halemba-Wirek; KWK Pokój; KWK Bolesław Śmiały; Ruch Sosnica Oddz. KWK Sosnica-Makoszowy; KWK Piast and KWK Ziemowit; and four specialised companies - Zakład Elektrociepłownie in Rybnik; Zakład Gorniczych Robot Inwestycyjnych in Bieruń; Zakład Remontowo-Produkcyjny in Bieruń; and Zakład Informatyki i Telekomunikacji in Rybnik.

The mines are involved in the production of coal used mainly by heat and power generating plants.

KW is being restructured by the government and will be sold off. The restructured state-owned KW will need another PLN 2 billion (about EUR 500 million) in capital by the end of June 2016, CEO Krzysztof Sedzikowski said in March. "I'm not yet able to say which investors will provide the financing, we're in talks," he said at the time. (jh/rk)
