The National Trade Union of Nurses and Midwives wants wages to be increased by PLN 1,500 over a three-year-period.

Deputy Health Minister Cezary Cieślukowski had previously said that such an increase would not be manageable until 2020.

Wednesday's protest began outside Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz's Office, and it was due to move on to the lower house of parliament.

The protests follow a strike at a hospital in central Poland in June, and a vast protest in Kraków in May. (nh)
