Polish-German consortium wins Bulgaria metro contract

Polish rolling stock producer Newag in a consortium with Siemens AG and Siemens EOOD has won a EUR 142 million contract for the delivery of 20 trains for the metro in Bulgaria's capital city Sofia.

The estimated value of the contract is reportedly worth EUR 37.4 million and the consortium will earn PLN 18.5 million net additionally if the client decides to order an additional 10 trains.
The Siemens and Newag consortium submitted the lowest-price bid for the initial phase of Sofia metro Line 3, which is due to open in 2019. Sofia Metro opened bids for the contract on 13 August, revealing that the consortium had offered a price of USD 238.6m.
Siemens and Newag are offering a 60m-long version of Siemens' Inspiro metro train, which the consortium has already supplied to Warsaw.
The 7-km central section of Line 3 from Botevgradsko Shosse to Ovcha Kuptel will run entirely underground in a double-track bored tunnel and will have seven stations. When all phases are complete, the line will run for 16.5km from Vassil Levski in the east to Knazyhevo in the west, interchanging with Line 1 at St Clement and Line 2 at NDK.
The project is being partially funded by the European Union through the 2014-2020 Operational Programme Transport for Bulgaria. (jh/rk)
