The two countries, which joined the European Union on the same day in 2004, are being accused by UK-based European Alliance for Human Rights in North Korea (EAHRNK) group of forcing North Korean nationals into work.

Firms in the two countries have allegedly recruited the workers via schemes sponsored by Pyongyang.

Poland alone is believed to have as many as 800 North Korean workers, who are known to have worked in shipyards and orchards in recent years.

EAHRNK says that Poland and Malta have signed European Union employment laws and their respective governments should investigate this breach of EU labour practices.

Other countries named by the report as hosting North Korean labourers are: Algeria, Angola, China, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates.
