The Polish region of Mazovia, in which the country’s capital Warsaw lies, is a leader in economic growth in terms of per capita GDP among all regions of the European Union.

The data by the European statistics office Eurostat presented at this year's "Open Days" European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels, reported that between 2008 and 2013, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita of Mazovia increased by 24 percent.

In 2008, GDP per capita in Mazovia amounted to approximately 80 percent of the EU average, while in 2013, it was seven percentage points above the EU average.

“There are many factors that make the Polish regions achieve such excellent results,” says Markku Markkula, head of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), an EU advisory body, consisting of EU Member-States governments.

Markkula explained that the impact on economic growth of Polish regions is primarily down to the quality of the education system in combination with a strong, fast growing entrepreneurial culture. (rg/rk)
