Polish president calls for EU to revise CO2 reduction policy

President of Poland Andrzej Duda appealed on Friday for the EU to review its roadmap for the reduction of CO2 emissions, arguing that the cuts are detrimental to the economy, above all Poland's.

Although Poland's coal industry is struggling at present, partly owing to cheap coal prices elsewhere, 90 percent of the country's power is generated by coal.
Duda's comments, which were made at a meeting of the National Development Council, precede the 30 November EU climate talks due to be held in Paris.
“If the EU takes on such far-reaching commitments in terms of reducing emissions, then it is clear that enormous costs will have to be borne,” he said.
“Unfortunately, Poland incurrs some of the largest costs in the implementation of these provisions which apply today within the EU,” he added.
The president claimed that the EU would lose its competitive edge with other economies, arguing that countries such as the US, Russia, China, Brazil and India, have not made steps in cutting emissions. (nh/di)
