The Central Statistical Office (GUS) has announced that the November unemployment rate was 9.6 percent, unchanged from October, though experts believe that the labour market is currently in a good condition.

Although the unemployment rate for November was unchanged from the previous month, the number of people registered as unemployed went up slightly to 1.53 million.

Both figures are lower than in November 2014, where the unemployment rate was 11.4 percent.

The data from GUS is also a slight improvement on a previous estimate from the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy, which had estimated a 9.7 percent unemployment rate for November.

“It is important that the unemployment rate has fallen by 1.8 percentage points from a year ago [November 2014], which is a very good result. Today’s data is yet another confirmation, in addition to information about employment and pay, that the labour market is becoming an ‘employee’s market’,” commented Piotr Rogowiecki, Office Director of Polish Union of Loan Funds.

Rogowiecki stated that in his opinion the unemployment rate will still be in single digits at the end of this year, the first time this has occurred since 2008.

According to Rogowiecki recent data on personal consumption in Poland indicates the domestic market will continue to grow, further helping the labour market.

Meanwhile Krzysztof Inglot, spokesperson for Work Service, noted that the rise in the number of people registered as unemployed is due to seasonal cycles.

“This is largely related to the registration in employment agencies of people who have finished work from the summer season,” Inglot explained.

However Inglot also pointed out that worrying regional differences in unemployment still persist and are reinforcing divisions between “Poland A” (western Poland) and “Poland B” (eastern Poland), a historic division which can be traced back to the Partitions of Poland.

GUS revealed that the highest rate of unemployment in November was in the Warmian-Masurian voivodeship, at 15.9 percent, while the lowest rate was in Greater Poland, at just 6.1 percent. (sl/rg)
