The main aim of the Batory programme is to build passenger ferries in Polish Baltic Sea docks.

The development ministry also wants Poland to focus on producing gas tankers.

"Thanks to the measures proposed by the Ministry of Development, Polish ship owners will perhaps stop ordering units in China or Korea, and place orders with Polish shipyards,” said Ewa Kruchelska, head of shipbuilding and offshore construction firm Crist, which is based in the northern port of Gdynia.

The Polish government on Tuesday adopted an ambitious plan, announced by Development Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, to inject some PLN 1 trillion into the economy over the next 25 years. (pk)
