Poland has cheapest food in EU: report

Food in Poland cost 63 percent of the average in the European Union last year, and was the cheapest in the bloc, a new report by Eurostat has said.

“In 2015, the price level of a comparable basket of food and non-alcoholic beverages across the European Union (EU) was more than twice as high in the most expensive member state than in the cheapest one,” Eurostat, the statistics office of the European Union, said in a statement.

The agency added that the “the lowest price levels were observed in Poland (63 percent of the average), Romania (64 percent), Bulgaria (70 percent), Lithuania (78 percent), the Czech Republic and Hungary (both 79 percent).”

On the other end of the scale, “Denmark had the highest price level for food and non-alcoholic beverages in the EU in 2015, at 145 percent of the EU average, followed by Sweden (124 percent), Austria (120 percent), Ireland and Finland (both 119 percent) and Luxembourg (116 percent)”. (rg/pk)
