The bureau’s database includes some 305,000 parents behind payment. Fifty-seven percent of them have run up other debts, the data show.

The head of the bureau’s national board, Adam Łącki, says that alimony debt is commonly treated leniently, and viewed as a social phenomenon rather than an economic problem.

Meanwhile, “it turns out that six out of ten alimony debtors have at least one more creditor to pay off,” he says. There are over 175,000 such debtors, the bureau finds, adding that the total amount due to other sectors equals PLN 2.3 bn (EUR 0.5 bn).

Liabilities resulting from unpaid alimony have been increasing over the years. Indebted parents owe on average some PLN 33,000 (ca. EUR 7,5000) to their kids. An overwhelming majority of those behind payment, 95 percent, are male.

The debtors are most often aged between 36 to 45 years old. One in five is below 35 years of age. (aba)
