The European Commission has voiced concern over a 2015 deal by Poland to sell a high-speed internet band, saying the move could violate EU laws.

The commission sent a letter to Polish authorities on Thursday expressing its concern over the sale of the bandwidth, known as LTE and used by mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets to wirelessly connect to the internet.

In 2015, Poland sold the 800MHz band to operator Sferia outside of an auction, resulting in a complaint by the Polish arm of T-Mobile.

Other Polish operators had to pay millions of złoty for the use of the frequency.

“The Commission has doubts whether the allocation of the 800 MHz band to the Sferia mobile operator is compatible with EU rules on spectrum management,” the PAP news agency quoted the European Commission as saying.

Poland has two months to reply to the formal notice. (rg)
