Polish PKP Intercity to spend PLN 2.5 bn on trains

Polish state controlled railway operator PKP Intercity wants to invest PLN 2.5 billion (EUR 583 million) in new trains and in modernising the fleet it already owns.

PKP Intercity plans to buy 55 new carriages and modernise the existing 455.
The company also seeks to buy 30 new electric locomotives and 10 hybrids.
A further 20 locomotives, already in the company’s fleet, will be modernised to be able reach a speed of 160 km/h.
A total of 15 repair stations would be modernised as a part of the plan.
Jarosław Oniszczuk, board member of PKP Intercity said: “The new development strategy will build our position in the competitive market. Hence the emphasis on the modernisation of our fleet.”
In 2015 PKP Intercity has finished the previous modernisation plan, which cost almost PLN 5.5 billion, and allowed for the acquisition of the FLIRT3 and PesaDART trains. (tf/rg)
