Shipments to China, Vietnam, Japan and South Africa are among those that have been cancelled.

Although the majority of Polish poultry exports end up in the European Union, farming sector analyst Grzegorz Rykaczewski says the market closures may be a problem.

“China and South-East Asia are valuable to Poland for two reasons. Firstly, they offer much better margins,” Rykaczewski said.

He added that those markets purchase carcasses that are unpopular in other parts of the world.

Polish birds, which make up about 15 percent of total European Union poultry production, are exported primarily to Germany, Britain, France and the Czech Republic.

Some 700 birds were found dead at a goose farm in Lubuskie province, western Poland, five days ago. Tests detected the H5N8 strain of avian flu, which is considered not harmful to humans. (vb/pk)
