The eight-year contract with defence contractor Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW) is for four firing modules, each of which comprises nearly 40 military vehicles, including 24 of the self-propelled howitzers.

The deal is the largest in the history of Poland's defence industry, according to Arkadiusz Siwko, CEO of the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), of which HSW is a subsidiary.

The first module is expected to be delivered in 2018.

Prime Minister Beata Szydło, who was at the official signing, said Poland wants to continue having domestically-manufactured equipment supplied to the Polish army.

She said Polish armaments companies should “make up the foundation of production of equipment for the Polish army”, adding that this was in line with the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party's programme.

“PiS's programme clearly states that our priority is economic development based on rebuilding manufacturing,” Szydłlo said. (vb/pk)
