Minister Elżbieta Rafalska added that around 3.8 million children make use of the programme which provides PLN 500 (EUR 114) to families for the second child onwards.

Speaking to the public TVP broadcaster, Rafalska said that until the end of the year, it is forecast that the programme will cost “over PLN 17 billion”.

The programme was initially intended to reverse Poland's declining birthrate, but recently government officials have said that the programme has helped many children to come out of the poverty trap, helping countless families to afford things they could not have purchased earlier.

“A significant reduction of poverty in children and youths is one primary goal which we have already achieved,” Rafalska said.
