About half of those accounts are active, which means that there was at least one transfer monthly, IAR said.

The ZBP's deputy chairman Mieczysław Groszek told IAR that, compared to the second quarter of 2016, the number of online bank accounts rose by about five percent, and by nine percent year-on-year.

Meanwhile, of some 2.4 million corporate accounts, held mainly by medium-sized and small businesses, about 65 percent were active.

The number of payment cards in use has also grown, by 540,000 comapred to the previous quarter, to more than 36 million. (vb)
