Food in Poland cheapest in the EU

The price of food, beverages and tobacco in Poland is the lowest in the EU, with Danes paying the most for these products according to a new report.

According to the European statistics agency Eurostat, in 2015 “the prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages in Denmark were 45 percent above the EU average, while in Poland they were 37 percent below the EU average.”

Poland also had the lowest prices for meat, milk cheese and eggs.

Meanwhile alcohol prices ranged significantly around the European Union. “Alcohol was priced in Ireland at 75 percent above the EU average, however 36 percent below in Bulgaria,” the report said.

The highest prices for tobacco products were observed in the United Kingdom (119 percent above the EU average), while the lowest were recorded in Bulgaria (50 percent below). (rg)
